New year, new hair? It's quite possible now I've been converted to the top knot. I've thrown down my straighteners and over zealous styling in favour of this chic but practical hairstyle. The chignon reached new vertical limits in the autumm/winter catwalk shows by Stefano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent, Erdem, Christian Lacroix and Ashley Isham. The top knot has been championed by ballerinas of all ages and Audrey Hepburn enthusiasts for decades giving it a classical glamour. However, after some careful research, and much to my delight the topknot appears to be a hairstyle of honour for Samurai warriors and favoured particularly by courtesans employed in the Japanese Kabuki theatre tradition. Please try telling that to the fashion pack next time they reach for the hair pins.

Top notch top knot
